Functions
-
Pointers are supposed to point and spot game. They are dogs with the strongest sense of smell amongst all other shooting dogs. There are various pointers, the most common being the English pointer and the German short hair (smooth or wire haired) plus a variety of other breeds which I will not go into details for the time being.

-
Retrievers are the dogs that bring back to their owner any object you throw, including of course game that has been shot. Some of the most common retrievers are the English and Irish setters. The Golden Retriever, very well known for his intelligence. The Labrador retriever, both the black and the golden, the latter being preferred because its tolerance to all weather conditions. There are many more retrievers but I will stop at the most common.
-
Trackers are used primarily to go after injured big game usually on a leach. They also are used as running dogs to beat out big game from their refuge. The most common tracker and the one used most is the Teckel or Dachshund. A very intelligent and courageous dog. The Teckel is also widely used to hunt game hidden in their furrows like rabbits, badgers, porcupine and others.

-
Chasing Dogs are the ones who drive game, usually big game, out of their hidings towards the positions where hunters are posted. These include all breeds of terriers and hounds. They are the most chosen because of their great speed and loud barking.
-
Crossbreeds. Some crossbreeds adapt better to climatic conditions then the pure bred plus they are more resistant then the pure breeds, their immune system being better adapted to the location they live in.
-
Others. All breeds of dogs and all crosses will do the job assigned to them with consistent training and practice.
Vaccination and Care
It is of primary importance to vaccinate your dogs periodically following the instructions of your Vet and to always maintain your dog’s health by means of washing, cleaning, anti parasite treatments etc…
